Ukrainian Sacral Culture in Brazil

On Sunday, November 28th 2010, Andriy Nahachewsky made a presentation on “Ukrainian Sacral Culture in Brazil,” sponsored by the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Edmonton.  Some 400,000 Ukrainians live in Brazil, and their spiritual and religious culture is very rich. Andriy spent nearly 7 months in Brazil last year to explore Ukrainian traditions in that country.

Andriy started the talk with a general background of the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox churches in Brazil, then showed a brief video of several religious celebrations. He then selected six Ukrainian churches (there are about 240 in Brazil in total) and showed slides of their architecture and fascinating religious paintings.

Discussion following the presentation was lively.  Andriy’s large collection of interview recordings, photos, videos and artifacts are being accessioned in the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives at the Kule Folklore Centre, University of Alberta.
