The Kule Folklore Centre aspires to become the most important centre for the study of Ukrainian culture outside of Ukraine. Five strategic priorities have been identified which will be prominent in the Centre's profile:

 

• teaching undergraduate and graduate programs
• developing internet materials, including course delivery and resource banks

• conducting fieldwork and maintaining a growing archive
• reaching out to the community with publications and by other means
• supporting researchers and students with scholarships and assistantships

UKRAINIAN TRADITIONAL MOTANKY
The Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum of Alberta

hosted a motanka workshop on Saturday, 13 December 2008

An illustrated lecture on Ukrainian Christmas traditions by Dr.
Natalie Kononenko, Kule Chair of Ukrainian Ethnography, University of
Alberta, was held followed by hands-on instruction in making motanky.

LUNCH BY THE BOOKS: Pysanka: The Ukrainian Easter Egg in Canada

On March 20, 2008, PhD candidate in Ukrainian Folklore Mariya Lesiv of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies presented the evolution of this phenomenon in Canada in terms of four contrasting but interrelated sub-traditions: the Old Country, National/Ethnic, Popular, and Individualistic paradigms. This framework can contribute to a better understanding of not only Ukrainian but other ethnic experiences in new contexts.

On January 17, 2006, Oleksandra Britsyna, Senior Researcher at the Rylsky Institute of Art, Folklore, and Ethnology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Kyiv, spoke on the folklore of the Orange Revolution at the University of Alberta.
