UKRAINIAN FOLK TALES AT DEEP FREEZE

On January 8, 2012, at the Deep Freeze Festival, Dr. Natalie Kononenko told Ukrainian folk tales that she collected during fieldwork in Ukraine.

FOLK SONGS WORKSHOP

On December 7, 2011, the students from the Ukrainian Folk Songs class (UKR 422/522) held a Folk Songs workshop at St. John Institute and Cultural Centre. Participants enjoyed learning and/or singing along traditional Ukrainian songs. The workshop was followed by a reception provided by St. John's Institute.

FRIENDS OF THE UKRAINIAN FOLKLORE CENTRE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

On October 6, 2011, Friends of the Ukrainian Folklore Centre held the 2011 Annual General Meeting at St. John Institute and Cultural Centre. The AGM was followed by a presentation by Dr. Andriy Nahachewsky on Ukrainian Weddings in Brazil. A photo exhibit "Oi! Ukrainians in Brazil: in Farms and Cities" was on display. It illustrated different aspects of life of Ukrainians in Brazil.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "TWO DECADES LATER: POST-SOVIET TRANSFORMATION IN THE BALKANS AND EASTERN AND CENTRAL EUROPE"

On July 11, 2011, Korean Association of Central & Eastern European and Balkan Studies together with the Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore hosted an international conference "Two decades Later: Post-Soviet Transformationsin the Balkans and Eastern and Central Europe."

ASSEMBLING "AN ENSEMBLE OF COLOUR"

On Friday, December 3, 2010, the artist Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn spoke at the Kule Folklore Centre’s weekly Folklore Luncheon.

 

Larisa recently unveiled her latest work of art – “An Ensemble of Colour” at the Cheremosh Dancer’s 40th Anniversary Gala.  This piece was commissioned by the Cheremosh Dance Ensemble to commemorate this special event and it took over a year for Larisa to complete.  The original work is over 16 feet long and approximately 4 feet high and will be exhibited in a number of national and international locations before a permanent home is found for it.

UKRAINIAN SACRAL CULTURE IN BRAZIL

On Sunday, November 28th, 2010, Andriy Nahachewsky made a presentation on "Ukrainian Sacral Culture in Brazil," sponsored by the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Edmonton. Some 400,000 Ukrainians live in Brazil, and their spiritual and religious culture is very rich. Andriy spent nearly 7 months in Brazil last year to explore Ukrainian traditions in that country.

On Monday November 08, 2010 the Kule Folklore Centre welcomed Dr. Robert Klymasz, a premier Ukrainian Canadian Folklorist; and Myron Momryk, who recently retired from his position as Archivist at the Library and Archives of Canada(LAC); to speak on their fields of expertise in the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives, at the University of Alberta.

UKRAINIAN WEEK AT HANKUK UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN STUDIES, SEOUL, KOREA

Sogu Hong, PhD alumnus of the Ukrainian Folklore Program at the University of Alberta (U. of A.), has become the first Ukrainian professor in Korea. After finishing his doctoral dissertation on contemporary Ukrainian wedding traditions in Alberta, Dr. Hong now serves as Professor in the newly formed Ukrainian Department in Hankuk University for Foreign Studies, Seoul.

 

Andriy Nahachewsky, the Director of the Kule Folklore Centre, traveled to Korea October 26th to join the festivities of Ukrainian Week there.

UKRAINIANS IN BRAZIL

On Tuesday, September 14, Dr. Andriy Nahachewsky delivered a lecture entitled “Ukrainians in Brazil.” 400,000 people of Ukrainian descent live in Brazil, most of them in the southern state of Paraná, a region known as “Brazilian Ukraine.”

THE REDEDICATION OF THE BOHDAN MEDWIDSKY UKRAINIAN FOLKLORE ARCHIVE

The Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archive is the largest repository of Ukrainian folklore outside Ukraine.  On April 8, its new quarters were formally dedicated in a ceremony attended by Prof. Medwidsky, the man who founded the Archive, Natalie Kononenko, Acting Director of the Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore, and University officials Carl Amrhein, Provost, Colleen Skidmore, Acting Dean of Arts, and Adrian Del Caro, Chair of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies.

"ITALIAN VERNACULAR HEALING AND THE ENCHANTED WORLDVIEW"

On Friday, March 19, 2010, Sabina Magliocco, Ph.D. is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at California State University, Northridge, delivered a lecture entitled: "Italian Vernacular Healing and the Enchanted Worldview". Dr.Magliocco grew up in Italy and the United States.  A recipient of Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright and Hewlett fellowships, and an honorary Fellow of the American Folklore Society, she has published on religion, folklore, foodways, festival and witchcraft in Europe and the United States. Her books include The Two Madonnas: the Politics of Festival in a Sardinian Community (1993 & 2005), Neo-Pagan Sacred Art and Altars: Making Things Whole (2001), and Witching Culture: Folklore and Neo-Paganism in America (2004).  Along with documentary film maker John M. Bishop, she produced and directed a set of documentary films entitled Oss Tales (2007), on a May Day custom in Cornwall and in California.  Her current project involves tracing the roots of Italian American folk magic and healing traditions.

CONTEMPORARY BEADWORK IN UKRAINE

On Thursday, February 11, 2010, Maria Rypan, a designer and a recognized expert on “gerdan,” traditional Ukrainian-style beadwork, delivered a lecture on Contemporary Beadwork in Ukraine.

KULE BOOK LAUNCH

The launch of Champions of Philanthropy, Peter and Doris Kule and their Endowments took place on November 2 at the Faculty Club.  The book was edited by Natalie Kononenko and Serge Cipko and Folklore Centre members contributed extensively to the book.  Kononenko, in addition to serving as editor, interviewed the Kules and wrote their biography.  She wrote the introduction and an essay chronicling the history of the Kule Chair in Ukrainian Ethnography.  Andriy Nahachewsky wrote a history of the Kule Folklore Centre. LUNCH BY THE BOOKS: PYSANKA: THE UKRAINIAN EASTER EGG IN CANADA

On March 20, 2008, PhD candidate in Ukrainian Folklore Mariya Lesiv of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies presented the evolution of this phenomenon in Canada in terms of four contrasting but interrelated sub-traditions: the Old Country, National/Ethnic, Popular, and Individualistic paradigms. This framework can contribute to a better understanding of not only Ukrainian but other ethnic experiences in new contexts.
