KULE BOOK LAUNCH
The launch of Champions of Philanthropy, Peter and Doris Kule and their Endowments took place on November 2, 2009 at the Faculty Club. The book was edited by Natalie Kononenko and Serge Cipko and Folklore Centre members contributed extensively to the book. Kononenko, in addition to serving as editor, interviewed the Kules and wrote their biography. She wrote the introduction and an essay chronicling the history of the Kule Chair in Ukrainian Ethnography. Andriy Nahachewsky wrote a history of the Kule Folklore Centre.
Peter and Doris Kule and all of their Edmonton-based family members were present at the event, as were University dignitaries, President Indira Samarasekera, Provost Carl Amrhein, and Interim Dean of Arts Colleen Skidmore. Also present were in-town contributors to the Kule book and several of the contributors from out of town, notably Dominique Arel of the University of Ottawa and Father Stephen Wojcichowsky Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute.
After the presentation of the book, President Samarasekera announced that Peter and Doris Kule had agreed, in principle, to donate another 4 million dollars to the University of Alberta. This money will be double-matched by the University and will go to the creation of an Arts Institute dedicated to ground-breaking research in the Arts and Humanities.
