Certificate in Translation with a focus on Ukrainian

B.A. students may pursue this certificate in translation, while fulfilling existing requirements for majors and minors in Ukrainian, by taking designated courses for a minimum of *27. While the certificate does not prepare students to be full-fledged translators upon graduation, it provides them with the necessary focus to pursue further training in the profession. Furthermore, since the certificate puts the emphasis on cultural literacy, students who complete its requirements will have honed their skills in their area of specialization and will be ready to embark on many types of careers requiring cultural expertise, for example the foreign service, foreign trade, business abroad, tourism. a. MLCS 300, 400
b. UKR 407, 411, 413
c. *6 in UKR at the 300-level, selected from language or literature courses taught in Ukrainian.
d. *6 in UKR at the 400-level, selected from language or literature courses taught in Ukrainian.

Translating Literature: Ukrainian to English

Evaluation and comparison of existing translations, and extensive practical exercises. The course also considers the common difficulties of translating various genres and styles; dialectal, social, generational and other subvarieties of language, as well as idiomatic and figurative language.
