View of Lviv from City Hall. The Korniakt Tower is on the right.

Kostiantyn Korniakt (Posthumous portrait, c. 1630, by anonymous artist)

Like Edmonton today, Lviv of the 16th —18th centuries was a multiethnic city. In the late 16th c. one of its most wealthy citizens was Kostinatyn Korniak, a wine merchant from Crete. He married Anna Didushyts’ka, the daughter of a powerful Ruthenian family, and became a generous benefactor of the Church of the Dormition and its confraternity. This institution was responsible for supporting the church, financing a school, running a very successful printing press, and maintaining its own hospital, which had been founded in 1522. Among Lviv’s landmarks erected by Korniakt are the eponymous tower next to the Church of the Dormition and a palatial townhouse with its own Italian courtyard.
