B.A. Degree in Scandinavian

This requires students to take a minimum of *30 to a maximum of *48 at the senior level, of which at least *6 must be at the 400-level. We recommend that students begin with Norwegian or Swedish 111 & 112 (or 211 & 212) in their first year in preparation for the senior courses, but only courses from the 200-level on up can count toward a concentration. Scandinavian 410 is normally required for all students with a major subject of concentration in Scandinavian and is strongly recommended as pre- or co-requisite for all students in senior Scandinavian literature courses at the 400-level.

For the four-year B.A. Degree, the Faculty of Arts requires nine core courses, a major subject of concentration, a “second” subject or minor, and a Canadian content requirement as part of the 20 full-year course (FCE) requirement.

For Scandinavian as the minor concentration, the Department requires Norwegian 211 & 212 or Swedish 211 & 212 plus *6 at the 300- or 400- level.

Note that students in Scandinavian may take either Norwegian 111 & 112 or Swedish 111 & 112, likewise either Norwegian 211 & 212 or Swedish 211 & 212. Norwegian 211 & 212 or Swedish 211 & 212 are the prerequisites for all 400-level Scandinavian courses. 400-level courses may also be taken with consent of the Department.

Combined Honours B.A. in Scandinavian
An Honours degree is more specialized and requires a higher academic standard than the B.A. Degree. The Combined Honours B.A. in Scandinavian and another discipline gives students the opportunity to study two fields in some depth. Possible combinations are Scandinavian/German, Scandinavian/English, Scandinavian/History and many others.

Faculty requirements stipulate a minimum of *36 in each subject, of which *30 must be at the senior level. For the Scandinavian component, the required courses are the same as for the major in Scandinavian.

Bachelor of Commerce Degree/Major in European Studies-Scandinavian
The Faculty of Business, through its Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS), and in cooperation with the Faculty of Arts, Department of Modern Languages, has developed this innovative and unique program. It is designed to produce Business graduates with all the functional skills required by the modern business world and couple that with language expertise in one or more of the languages of Europe and knowledge of the politics, history, economics and culture of Europe.

International firms are always seeking students with a functional fluency in a European language, combined with familiarity with the social, economic and political structures of Europe. Canadian firms with trading ties to Europe or with European operations frequently prefer the graduate who can be quickly comfortable dealing with European partners or environments.

The major in European Studies permits a student to construct a major in Scandinavian providing they are able to fulfill the requirement of *18 in those languages.

Required language sequencing: NORW 111 & 112 and 211 & 212, or SWED 111 & 112 and 211 & 212; SCAND 410; and *3 from 300- or 400-level SCAND courses.

Students may choose European electives in the program from the following: SCAND 341, 342, 345, 353, 354, 355, 356, 420; any other SCAND course with permission.
