Academy Strings Orchestra
Tanya Prochazka, Director
The Academy Strings, conducted by Tanya Prochazka, is the principal student string ensemble at the University, composed primarily of University string students. The string ensemble is offered as a course in the Department of Music, requiring a successful audition for entrance and including regular rehearsals and concerts.
The Academy Strings' annual concert schedule consists of six concerts at various venues, (including Convocation Hall and the Winspear Centre for Music) two or three of which are exclusively performed by Academy Strings, and three or four concerts for which Academy members form the string sections for the University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra. They have performed throughout western Europe, Alberta, British Columbia and Cuba. In March 2005, Academy Strings plan to bring their Cuban counterparts (Musica Eterna) to collaborate with them in a tour of Alberta.
The Academy Strings was founded by former University of Alberta violin professor, Norman Nelson, co-founder of the famed Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
