FROM THE PRESIDENT

Elsewhere in this newsletter you will see the rich program the Society has prepared for its annual meeting, which takes place this year in Philadelphia PA (16-20 November 1994), in conjunction with the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. Please plan to attend our panels, take part in the annual Business Meeting, and socialize with fellow Society members at the reception some of our local colleagues are planning for us there!

Also in the newsletter you will find a report about the American Slovene Congress, which many Society for Slovene Studies members have joined. This is, in my opinion, an important new initiative. The Society, as a scholarly body, has quite different missions from the Congress. Nevertheless, a great deal of synergy can be developed between the two in pursuit of common goals.

And one last point: this is my final message as president. At the next Business Meeting we will be seeking nominations for a new SSS president, one who will see us -- if tradition holds -- through to the year 2000. It has been a distinct honor for me to serve as Society president, and to follow in paths so well laid out by our founding president, Professor Rado L. Lencek, and his successor, Professor Carole Rogel. Please join with me in according the new president, whoever she or he might be, the same warm, friendly, encouraging support that Rado, Carole and I have enjoyed during the first twenty years of the Society's life!

Henry R. Cooper, Jr.

A Note from the Editor of SLOVENE STUDIES

Slovene Studies 14/2 is now printed and should be mailed to members shortly. -- Tom M.S. Priestly

A Note from the Interim Editor of the SSS Letter

Filling in for Ray Miller, I have managed to find a complete set of Macintosh fonts which can be used for Slovenian. I have also determined that it would be much easier for the editor if the submissions for the Letter were submitted by e-mail or ftp. Since most university facilities cannot handle alternate-set characters, e-mail should utilize an unused character as a modifier, e.g., c^ for c with a hachek, which can be easily globalled. -- DFS

Objavljali jih bomo dvojezic^no, praviloma slovensko in angles^ko, ali enojezic^no. The Fran Ramovs^ Slovene Language Institute of the Scientific Research Center, Slovene Academy of Arts and Sciences (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and The Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Center for the Humanities, University of Kansas (Lawrence, USA) invite you to contribute to the annual refereed publication Slovenski jezik--Slovene Linguistic Studies, the inaugural issue of which is scheduled to appear in 1996.

Slovenski jezik--Slovene Linguistic Studies continues two previous publications: the journal Slovenski jezik, published from 1938 to 1941 in Ljubljana, and the annual Jezikoslovni zapiski, which had begun to appear in 1991 as a regular publication of the Fran Ramovs^ Slovene Language Institute. Slovenski jezik-Slovene Linguistic Studies intends to publish articles that are concerned primarily with Slovene or are of interest to Slovene linguistics. The publication will be in two languages, usually Slovene and English, or in one of the two languages. If an article is published in only one of the two languages, a summary of the article in the other language will be provided such that citation is possible on the basis of the summary alone.

Papers sent to the Editorial Board by the beginning of each academic year will be considered for publication in the following spring issue. Additional information can be obtained by contacting one of the editors at the addresses below. Contributors in Europe should contact the Editor-in-Chief; those in America should contact the North American Editor.

THE AMERICAN SLOVENE CONGRESS FOUNDED

At the "Slovene Presence in America Symposium", held on 1 May 1993 in New York City, an organizational committee was elected to prepare the groundwork for establishing an organization that would be representative of Americans of Slovene descent in the United States. Once established, such an organization would affiliate as an autonomous member with the World Slovene Congress, founded in 1991. Early in January 1994, this elected committee (Dr. Joseph Bernik, Dr. Silvester Lango, Professor Rado L. Lencek, Dr. I. Hilary Rolih, and Dr. Rudolph M. Susel) completed the preliminary work on the project, formulated the proposals of the Constitution and the By-Laws of such an organization, distinctly designating it The American Slovene Congress (ASC), convoked a Working Symposium for discussion of the plan, the Constitution and the By-Laws of the ASC, and for election of its representatives.

The Symposium took place on 26 February, when delegates from a number of Slovene ethnic communities discussed, approved and accepted the project, the proposed Constitution and By-Laws of the planned ASC, nominated and elected an Interim Council andd the Supervisory Committee of the ASC. The ballots of the election were counted at the first meeting of the Interim Council on 23 April 1994. The elected officers of the Council are: Dr. Silvester Lango (Chairman), Dr. Joseph Bernik (Secretary), and Dr. I Hilary Rolih (Treasurer). At this meeting, Dr. Rado L. Lencek was nominated and elected the Academic Advisor to the Council on the academic activities of the ASC. At the initial meeting of the Academic Working Group, five working programs outlined by Prof. Peter Remec, Dr. I Hilary Rolih, Dr. Silvester Lango, Prof. Rado L. Lencek, and Mag. Peter Rolih were discussed.

On 23 -24 June 1994, The World Slovene Congress (WSC) held its second convention in Vienna (Austria).
