A SLOVENE ALPHABET OF THE 19TH CENTURY

During the Alphabet War of the 19th century, Franc Serafin Metelko proposed an alphabet to replace the German-based one in use at the time. In 1825, he published Lehrgebäude der slowenischen Sprache in Ljubljana to teach his new system. Below is the beginning of the introduction to his book. The first column, labelled Neu-Krain (New Carniolan), lists his alphabet. The second page shows the recommended handwriting technique. (Thanks to Miran Hladnik for scanning these pages in Ljubljana.) The other pages are from a book using this alphabet in the WebMaster's collection which was printed by Jožef Blaznik in 1834. The alphabet came to be known as metelčica.
