Narratives of Citizenship (March 23-25, 2007) is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funded interdisciplinary conference that theorizes and interrogates the notion of citizenship as it manifests itself as a textual construction in fiction, law, historical documents and pedagogical dissemination.
In order to encourage cross-pollination between the academic, artistic and grassroots organizing sectors of society, the conference is arranged around three poles: a panel-based academic symposium that will theorize local, national, and international narratives of citizenship; an Artists' Gala that allows prominent Alberta authors and performing artists an opportunity to discuss, through their work, the place of the artist as citizen; and an interactive discussion that features Edmonton community leaders and organizers, who will be addressing ways in which the University's resources, both academic and pedagogical, may be used to benefit community members who have not traditionally had access to these resources.
We are pleased to welcome as our keynote speaker Daniel Coleman (McMaster University), author of White Civility: The Literary Project of English Canada (2006) and Masculine Migrations: Reading the Postcolonial Male in "New Canadian" Narratives (1998).
Although we are no longer accepting submissions, our call Call for Papers (.pdf format) is still available to curious eyes.
