"SonoCairo in Modern Egyptian History"
Michael Frishkopf
Department of Music
University of Alberta

The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded Dr. Michael Frishkopf a fellowship that will fully fund a year's research in Cairo.   In addition, he has been chosen to be a Scholar in Residence at The American Research Centre in Egypt.

His project will focus on the history of SonoCairo, Egypt's national recording company, known in Arabic as Sawt al-Qahira. They hold the rights to (and are nearly the sole producer of) Umm Kulthum's recordings, and many others of the most famous Egyptian singers, as well as the most famous recordings of Qur'anic recitation and religious singing (ibtihalat and tawashih).
