Crossing Boundaries, Living Modernity
Ms. Amal Ghazal
Ph.D. Candidate
Department of History and Classics
University of Alberta

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada has awarded Ms. Amal Ghazal a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto. At U of T she will be, as her title implies, crossing the boundaries of traditional scholarship in several ways. When interviewed by the CMEAS web staff, Ghazal said, "I am lucky to have two supervisors at the University of Toronto, Dr. Sean Hawkins from the Department of History and Dr. Jens Hanssen from the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilization. My work will bridge, intellectually speaking, the two departments and bring together scholars working on Africa, on the Middle East, on Islam and on post-colonial studies. I am looking forward to keeping everybody busy at these two departments and to enjoying a warm and welcoming environment, similar to the one the Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta has provided me for the last seven and a half years. I am so excited about going there I need to remind myself that I still need to finish my PhD dissertation first."
