"Ever since US politician Alfonse D'Amato tore a reproduction of the photograph Piss Christ into pieces in the US Senate in 1989, Andres Serrano has remained one of the world's most controversial artists. The subject matter of his photography—including aborted foetuses, the Ku Klux Klan and post-autopsy corpses—has continually provoked outrage, particularly among America's Christian Right, and even led one 'critic' to attack his work with a hammer during a retrospective exhibition in Melbourne.
"Andres Serrano was born in New York in 1950 to a Honduran immigrant father and Cuban mother and brought up as a devout Catholic. Having dropped out of high school early, he enrolled at the Brooklyn Museum School to study fine art before moving on to black and white photography. On graduating he found work in the art department of an advertising agency.
"Serrano's early work concentrated on scenes of his hometown, Brooklyn, but he soon started producing the large-scale colour photographs, which would become his trademark. Their themes of religious iconography and the human body came together in the most striking way with his Fluid Abstractions series (1987-1990), including the Piss Christ photograph of a plastic crucifix dipped in a beaker of the artist's urine."
