some useful links and references:

  • New, Jennifer (2005) Drawing from life: The journal as art. Princeton, NJ: Princeton Architectural Press. This book has a nice introduction and a well-curated selection of journals from a variety different people. In fact, one great strength of this book is the variety of different styles and personal visions. Jennifer New's website give a good overview of the book, including many reproduced images.

  • Susan Tucker's scrapbook site, including: Scrapbooks and Albums, Theories and Practice: An Annotated Bibliography

  • Gary Kelly (CRC chair at the university of alberta) has implemented a nice scrapbooking project through his CRC studio.

  • Michel Taussig has written about diaries and field work as well as the scrapbooks of William Burroughs. Here is a reference to one of his articles:

I have an abiding interest in scrapbooks as an off-shoot of the traditional field notes and journals used by ethnographers. As a bridge to a more fluid engagement with visual research, developing a practice of scrapbooking helps me to defamiliarize a straight journaling practice that I've never found especially fruitful.

I maintain this page as an ongoing project and as a resource for students taking my courses.
