- Work Transitions Project Overview
Welcome to the School - Work Transition Project (SWT) Research Program website. This reseawrch program centres around two longitudinal studies that have tracked the school, work, family, and community transitions of members of the Alberta (Canada) high school graduating Class of 1985 and, a decade later, the Class of 1996.
Over the past three decades, educational requirements for employment have increased and new skills sets have become important. The labour market has changed dramatically, and we have witnessed several severe recessions that particularly affected young workers. These changes have made movement from school to work, and from youth to adulthood, a more prolonged, complex, uncertain, and difficult process.
With the assistance of almost 5000 survey participants, and the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Alberta government, and the Univeristy of Alberta, the SWT research program has provided many unique insights into the education, career, and life paths of two cohorts of Alberta youth as they moved from school to work and from youth to adulthood in this rapidly changing environment.
We invite you to examine findings from our studies, information on our related reseawrch projects involving youth, work, and learning, and links to other similar studies and to information and work/learning resources. Most important, if you are one of the original members of the Class of 1985, we are planning a 25-year anniversary follow-up study, ETS Plus 25, and hope to be contacting you again sometime next year.
