The Medieval and Early Modern Institute, an interdisciplinary group of scholars at the University of Alberta, seeks to promote contact among different disciplines and theoretical approaches involved in the investigation and critical representation of the medieval and early modern world.

MEMI Film Festival

We are screening Alexander Nevsky (dir. Sergei Eisenstein, USSR 1938) on Wednesday, February 8th at Metro Theatre at the Garneau. The film will be introduced by Dr. Felice Lifshitz, and will be followed by a brief talk on the place of Nevsky in Russian culture and history by Dr. Jelena Pogosjan, of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. The program begins at 6:30pm.


Current MEMI Initiatives

As a result of discussions preceding and during the AGM, the MEMI board is working to globalize the mandate of the group. We are also developing interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate certificate programs. Finally, we are working on a new model for a virtual annual comparative pre-modern studies conference, to be sponsored jointly with Athabasca University.
